THE CHAPEL OF THE POLITICAL PRISONERS

THE CHAPEL OF THE POLITICAL PRISONERS

At the entrance to the former mine in Baia Sprie, with the blessing of Father Justin Pârvu (a former political prisoner and honorary citizen of Baia Sprie), a small stone chapel and a traditional Maramureșean cross (troiță) were erected, serving as a memorial dedicated to the suffering and sacrifice of those imprisoned here between 1950 and 1955.
The forced labor colonies from the early communist period have gone down in history as some of the most horrific forms of incarceration. At the Baia Sprie Mine, over 600 prisoners were held, from all social backgrounds, including intellectuals, teachers, writers, philosophers, priests, as well as former officers and peasants, both from Maramureș and other regions of Romania.
