THE BLUE LAKE

The Blue Lake is a protected area of national interest, located on the administrative territory of Baia Sprie, on the southern side of Mine Hill, at an altitude of 530m. It has an area of 0.5 hectares, a depth of 4 meters and it has an almost circular shape. This lake is unique due to its origins, but also because of the chemistry of the water and its special color.
The Blue Lake was formed between 1919-1920, by the accumulation of water following the collapse of a mining gallery or some surface works. It became famous because of its beautiful color and its unique property of changing shade depending on the season and meteorological factors. The presence of iron sulfate in the water creates blue and turquoise reflections in spring (April-May), emerald green in the summer, and in autumn the lake acquires a green-brown color. Around the lake there is a beautiful sessile oak forest, but also some pine trees that give the area a special charm.
The Blue Lake received the status of natural reserve of hydro-geological interest in 1977, and then in 2020.
